Located in the northwest of the country, this coastal area is most famous for its production of port wine. Increasing in popularity, Porto is largely unspoilt making it the perfect location for an authentic golfing experience in Portugal.

Whilst courses in the northern regions of Portugal may not be as familiar to golfers in comparison to those in the Algarve, they still offer facilities of the same high standard. The Philip Mackenzie Ross designed layouts at both Oporto and Vidago Palace are just some of the world-class courses on offer in the area, with much more waiting for you to discover.

Must-Visit Golf Courses in Porto
Axis Golfe Ponte de Lima
Located in the heart of Minho, in the hills overlooking the historic town of Ponte de Lima, Axis Golfe Ponte de Lima offers superb golfing facilities. Part of a hotel complex, the course stretches 6,560 yards from the championship tees and is played to a par of 71. Separated into two loops of nine, each half has different characteristics to provide variety for players. Combing hilly wooded terrain and flat play within a valley, golfers experience various elevation changes which will test all abilities.
Club de Golf de Miramar
One of Portugal’s oldest club, Club de Golf de Miramar was formed in 1932 by an English expatriate and was involved in the founding of the Portuguese Golf Federation in 1949. Originally designed by Mackenzie Ross, the course was later redesigned by Howard Swan to become one of the most challenging 9-hole layouts in Europe. Routed over coastal land between Espinho and Porto, a game of Club de Golf de Miramar should not be missed on your golfing holiday to Porto.
Estela Golf Club
Considered to have the best course in the area, Estela Golf Club is the ultimate destination for your golf holiday. Designed by Duarte Sottomayer, the course is a traditional par 72 layout, stretching 6,300 metres from the back tees along the Minho coast. Golfe Amarante
Designed by Jorge Santana da Silva in 1997, Golfe Amarante offers an excellent 18-hole mountain golf layout. Combing tumbling fairways and water hazards, the course demands good distance judgement and strategic thinking.
Oporto Golf Club
Established by a group of British wine exporters introduced golf to Portugal in 1890, Oporto Golf Club is the oldest club in Portugal. Renovated by Philip Mackenzie in the 1950’s, the course is routed over gently undulating land that helps to create an authentic links-style course. Whilst at the club, special attention should be paid to the magnificent clubhouse which is a monument to the history of Portuguese golf.

Part of a large hotel complex, Vidago Park Golf offers a magnificent 18-hole championship course in a historical setting. Originally built a summer retreat for the last Portuguese monarch, King Manuel II, the course offers incredible panoramic views from its elevated tees.
