Ballybunion
Ballybunion is an exciting challenge for all level of golfers. If you consider yourself a good golfer and there is a gentle breeze blowing, then you have a good chance you will score well. On the other hand, if there is an onshore breeze in full force, you can forget that good score and just try and enjoy the challenging but brilliant golf course. Bill Clinton actually enjoyed a round of golf on this very course in 1998.
Lahinch
Golf at Lahinch can be dated all the way back to 1892. Assisted by officers of the Scottish ‘Black Watch’ regiment who were stationed at Limerick, three locals laid out an 18-hole course. Fast forwarding to today, Lahinch golf course is still an absolutely fantastic golf course. A top tip is to take note of any goats sheltering near the clubhouse. Oh, and don’t forget your umbrella!
Portmarnock (Championship)
Portmarnock is no stranger to hosting important events, namely, on 19 occasions the Irish Open, the Canada Cup and the Walker Cup. You better be on the top of your game when it comes to the final five holes, they’re tough enough to challenge the best of golfers. While you’re on your round of golf, you’re treated to picturesque views of Ireland’s Eye (a small island off the coast, which is home to important seabird colonies).
The European Club
This course is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the Emerald Isle, the garden area, between the coastal towns of Arklow and Wicklow. This is a truly exciting place to play golf, huge dunes dominate the view with the Irish Sea giving a great backdrop. This course is no small feat, the 18-holes stretching out over 7,000 yards. This is an absolute must-play course on any golf holiday to Ireland.
The Island
You might be surprised to hear that The Island isn’t actually on an island. However, the people who named this course can be excused, it is located on what was previously an island, which is attached to the mainland. The Island isn’t the most known golf course in Ireland and it is truly underrated. It was once touted by a leading UK golf magazine as “the best golf course in Ireland you have never heard of!”
Ballyliffin
This course is the most northerly in Ireland. It is located just off Tullagh Point on the edge of Inishowen Peninsula. This is an extremely challenging golf course, which is stretched out over 7,200 yards. It’s no exaggeration to say that you need to be on the top of your game to score well on this course. Ballyliffin has already played host to a number of championships, including the North West of Ireland Open.
