Although this course isn’t the cheapest in the area, the course is well maintained, never overplayed and sure to impress.
San Roque New
Contrasting with the Old Course, the ‘New’ course has transformed San Roque into a stylish, high-quality club. Competing with the neighbouring Valderrama, Perry Dye has created a masterpiece on a 45 hectares plot. The course is flanked by a nature reserve on one side and the ocean on the other, this triangular course is one of the finest new resorts in Europe. Requiring all-around ability and a strong character for when the layout becomes challenging, the San Roque ‘New’ course is not one to be missed.
Aloha Golf Course
Despite new courses being constantly developed on the Costa del Sol, Club de Golf Aloha has retained its reputation as a top golf club for over 40 years. Designed in part by Javier Arana and Enrique Canales, the course opened in 1975. With a par of 72, the course is laid out on hilly terrain which will test players of all abilities. Despite somewhat of a restricted yardage (6,900 yards), the course is not as short you might think. Featuring narrowing fairways lined with eucalyptus groves, precision is key to post a good score at Club de Golf Aloha.
Santana Golf Club
Once part of an avocado farm, Santana is situated in 140 acres of orange and avocado groves and in front of the impressive Mijas Mountains. Although not the longest layout on the Costa del Sol, Santana challenges even the most experienced player. When you’re not gripped by possibly the best par 5 in Spain, you may even spot a Calzada Eagle soaring above, making this a top course for natural beauty. Combining spectacular bunkering, unusually shaped greens and a distracting river, Santana Golf & Country Club exhibits excellence throughout.
Los Naranjos
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Los Naranjos is laid out on a sprawling 170-acre site adjacent to Las Brisas. Originally operating in partnership with Las Brisas, the courses separated in the 1980’s, with Los Naranjos constructing its own clubhouse. As the name suggests, the course is complete with an orange grove and river. Typical of RTJ courses, Los Naranjos offers multiple bunkers and water obstacles in addition to undulating fairways.
El Chaparral
El Chaparral is a unique course for the Costa Del Sol. Designed by Pepe Gancedo, the 6,000-metre course is situated in a wooded valley. Run by Antonio Rubio as a family business, attention to detail has been paid to ensure players have the best experience possible. Whilst it might not be the longest course in this area, El Chaparral requires accuracy and technical skill to score well. The course layout has a logical structure, with size par three, six par fours and six par fives. Featuring valleys and canyons, each hole requires a thoughtful approach.
