Golf Club de Lyon
Founded in 1921, Golf Club de Leon is set in a magnificent 500-acre estate next to the River Rhone and boasts two excellent 18-hole golf courses. The Brocards, a 6105-metre par 72, was inaugurated in 1964 and is deceitfully difficult. Featuring a long Par 3 and numerous doglegs, accuracy is key in scoring well. Golf Club de Leon’s most recent course, the Sangliers, stretches 6575 metres and is played with a par of 72. Comprising of vast greens with subtle slopes, the course was designed by Huges Lambert and has hosted the Open de France in 2001.
Golf de la Bresse
60 km to the northeast of Lyon, Golf de la Bresse is situated in a tranquil, rural setting. Designed by Jeremy Pern, the 18-hole course is arranged in two returning nine, each concluding in testing par 5 doglegs. A mix of open and woodland holes, Golf de la Bresse offers plenty of variety without any distractions from residential developments. Featuring water hazards and bunkers, the serene environment allows golfers to focus on the challenge this course presents.
Golf International de Grenoble Bresson
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, Golf International de Grenoble has a total yardage of 6,821 and plays to a par of 73. Located amongst the foothills of the Alps, the elevation changes featured on this golf course make it one of the toughest in the country. Despite the challenging terrain, Golf International de Grenoble offers a spectacular backdrop, with fairways navigating alpine meadows with glistening lakes to forested foothills covered in a variety of trees.
Golf du Gouverneur
Located in the Dombes region which is known for its numerous ponds and lakes, Golf du Gouverneur offers two 18-hole courses. The most popular of these courses is known as Le Breuil and came into play in 1992. Organised in two returning loops of nines which wind round water hazards, the course becomes increasingly testing. The second course was designed by Didier Fruchet and is known as the Montaplan. Laid on slightly undulating terrain, the course is a natural haven, with water wildlife such as muskrats and herons often being spotted.
Golf & Country Club de Bossey
Golf & Country Club de Bossey is 10 km south of Geneva, just outside the small French village of Bossey. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior, the course opened in 1985 and is a challenge for every visitor. With not a single level hole, the course features countless elevation changes and slanted fairways. If this wasn’t challenging enough, there are also lakes, and sloping fast greens to overcome, with the beautiful views of Geneva and the French Jura mountains the only relief.
Golf & Country Club de Maison Blanche
Found in the foothills of the Jura, Golf & Country Club de Maison Blanche is an extremely private club which has no elaborate website or publicity. With guests only being allowed to play the 18-hole course just 5 times a year, it is worth making the journey to the club on your golfing holiday to France. Featuring large, fast greens and a variety of elevation changes, the course is a true test and one that should not be missed.
