Real Club de Golf Sotogrande
Opened in 1964, Sotogrande is widely regarded as the best golf course in Southern Spain and 2nd in the entire country. Despite its age, this course challenges even the most experienced of players. With bunkers and water hazards strategically placed on the top quality putting surface, this course’s reputation is known globally. Described as a ‘battleground’ by the designer, Trent Jones, subtle slopes and elevated greens test players further earning the par 72-course royal status.
Real Club Valderrama
Known as the ‘Augusta of Europe’, Valderrama is an iconic golf course which cannot be missed during your golfing holiday. This elite private members club isn’t the cheapest option on the Costa Del Sol, but for that reason, its green is never overplayed. Although the course is suitable for players of all abilities, the closing holes will provide a final challenge. Most players will be familiar with Valderrama after coverage of the 1997 Ryder Cup, where the course saw Seve Ballesteros captain a European victory.
Real Club de Golf de Sevilla
Located on the outskirts of Seville, south-east of the centre, Real Club de Golf de Sevilla is one the best golf courses in southern Spain. Designed by Jose Maria Olazabal in 1991, the course measures 6529 metres long with a par of 72. The layout is balanced but demanding, routed over undulating greens. Featuring over 10,000 trees, 90 bunkers and 9 lakes, the course presents many hazards for golfers to overcome. Golf de Sevilla has been the host of various major tournaments including the Seville Open in 2004 and the WGC-World Cup of Golf 2004. Similarly, in 2008, 2010 and 2012 it hosted the Spanish Open, and in 2009 it hosted the Andalusia Open.
La Reserva Club de Golf
Founded in 2003, La Reserva is a long, wide golf course located between two valleys. Situated in an elevated position about Sotogrande, this 18-hole par 72 course stretches 7,400 yards. Balancing both aesthetics and technical excellence, both beginners and experts are able to enjoy La Reserva Club de Golf. Host to the NH Collection Open, La Reserva saw Italy’s Marco Crespi win the inaugural title in 2014.
The Old Course at The San Roque Club
Situated between Jerez and Marbella in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, The San Roque Club offers two exclusive 18-hole golf courses. Stretching 6508 metres and with a par of 72, the course was designed by Dave Thomas in 1990, with the bunkers later redesigned by Seve Ballesteros. Routed over undulating terrain, the course features numerous elevation changes and water hazards to test a player’s ability.
The New Course at The San Roque Club
Contrasting with the Old Course, the ‘New’ course has transformed San Roque into a stylish, high-quality club. Competing with the neighbouring Valderrama, Perry Dye has created a masterpiece on a 45 hectares plot. The course is flanked by a nature reserve on one side and the ocean on the other, this triangular course is one of the finest new resorts in Europe. Requiring all-around ability and a strong character for when the layout becomes challenging, the San Roque ‘New’ course is not one to be missed.
