Real Club de Golf Sotogrande
Opened in 1964, Sotogrande is widely regarded as the best golf course in Southern Spain and 2nd in the entire country. Despite its age, this course challenges even the most experienced of players. With bunkers and water hazards strategically placed on the top quality putting surface, this course’s reputation is known globally. Described as a “battleground” by the designer, Trent Jones, subtle slopes and elevated greens test players further earning the par 72-course royal status.
Real Club Valderrama
Known as the “Augusta of Europe”, Valderrama is an iconic golf course which cannot be missed during your golfing holiday. This elite private members club isn’t the cheapest option on the Costa Del Sol, but for that reason, it’s green is never overplayed. Although the course is suitable for players of all abilities, the closing holes will provide a final challenge. Most players will be familiar with Valderrama after coverage of the 1997 Ryder Cup, where the course saw Seve Ballesteros captain a European victory.
Finca Cortesin Hotel Golf & Spa
Although this course only opened in 2007, it has already established itself as a top golf course. At almost 7,000 metres, Finca Cortesin is one of Europe’s longest layouts and has a relaxed atmosphere with excellent facilities. The course came into the spotlight in June 2008 when the World Match Play was moved to Spain. Since then, it has seen the likes of England’s Ross Fisher claim the 2009 Championship and Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts narrowly win the 2012 title.
Real Club de Golf Las Brisas
One of the oldest courses in the Malaga area, Las Brisas opened in 1968. Combining bunkers, water hazards and raised green sites, the course offers an enjoyable experience from start to finish. One of first to use bentgrass, Las Brisas has hosted both the 1973 World Cup of Golf and the 1987 Spanish Open, cementing its reputation as a quality course.
La Reserva de Sotogrande
Located within two valleys, La Reserva is both a long and wide course. Although some may find this intimidating, obstacles are less frequent than other neighbouring sites. Host to the NH Collection Open, La Reserva saw Italy’s Marco Crespi win the inaugural title in 2014. Whilst a second course has been planned, development has been paused whilst the Costa Del Sol recovers from the economic downturn.
San Roque Golf Club
Located in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja Mountains, the Old Course at San Roque opened for play in 1990. Thanks to this location, the 6,494 metre, par 72 course is undulating with players experiencing numerous elevation changes throughout play. Now the winter home of the European PGA Tour School, the course will challenge even the most advanced players, with deep ravines, bunkers and strategic water obstacles providing further distraction.
